The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has unveiled Decision 1191/QĐ-BGTVT dated 30/09/2024, a landmark initiative to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Vietnam's transport sector.

The National Dialogue on Green Transport Development in Vietnam, organized by the Ministry of Transport and GIZ, aimed to discuss challenges and solutions to attract investment resources for developing green transport infrastructure and transitioning to green energy by 2050, with active participation from international organizations and government representatives.

The Ministry of Transport in Vietnam, together with GIZ Vietnam and ICCT, held a technical meeting to discuss the development of national regulations on fuel economy for passenger cars, motorcycles, and mopeds.

On 29 March 2024, GIZ and Deloitte in cooperation with NITI Aayog, released the report from the study “Power Market Reforms to Facilitate Renewable Energy-Based Electric Vehicle Charging in India”. The report “Recommendations to Enable Renewable Energy Based EV Charging in India” was released by Mr. Sudhendu Jyothi Sinha, Advisor, Infrastructure Connectivity vertical, NITI Aayog, Government of India and he delivered the keynote address.

Hanoi, 3rd of November, 2023 - the Deputy Minister of Transport, His Excellency (H.E.) Le Anh Tuan, led a high-level technical meeting titled “Developing and Analyzing Scenarios for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Mitigation in Transport to 2050 towards Net-Zero Emission”.

Hanoi, 21st of September, 2023 - Hanoi City People's Committee officially issued Decision No. 23/2023/QĐ-UBND on introducing economic-technical norms for large electric buses within the city.

On 2 August, WRI and the Shenzhen Urban Transport Planning Center jointly organized a workshop to explore how provinces and cities could control the growth of transport carbon emissions while contributing to China's "Transport Strong Nation" vision.

From July 24-27, a GIZ-led delegation of the Viet Nam Road Administration, the Viet Nam Register, and the Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City visited Beijing to learn about e-mobility and fuel economy development in China.

In Hanoi, between the 17th and 21st of July, 2023, Viet Nam’s Ministry of Transport and GIZ held a five-day training program on “Integrated energy system modelling for transport sector towards net-zero emissions”. Participants used the TIMES model to calculate and predict GHG emissions from the transport sector.

On August 1, 2023, the NDC Transport Initiative for Asia’s (NDC-TIA) China Component project invited experts and practitioners from the fields of low-carbon development and sociology for a joint discussion.

The CEM14 side event focused on bringing together government representatives and practitioners from across the NDC-TIA and Leadership Group for Clean Transport in Asia (LG-CTA) network to exchange their experiences and lessons learnt from the development of the transport decarbonization pathways and strategies in Asian countries.

From 9th to 11th May 2023 in Ha Long, Viet Nam, a 3-day training workshop brought together 26 participants of ministries of transport and ministries of environment from Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Republic of Maldives, the Philippines, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam to discuss emission accounting and scenario design.

On April 11th, 2023, WRI, jointly with Guangdong climate stakeholders, organized a workshop on achieving zero-emission transport. In order to scale up the province’s current success, the workshop participants agreed that more and intensified dialogues among different stakeholders including policymakers, researchers, and the industry are needed.

WRI India organized an one-day conference, Uddheshya, on 22nd March 2023, with 80 gender experts, transport planners, researchers, practitioners, civil society representatives, and other stakeholders to discuss and deliberate on gender-inclusivity in transport and achieving equitable access to mobility and opportunities.

Building on the interviews with NDC-TIA partners and other organizations working in China, India, and Vietnam, this final blog highlights the key commonalities and lessons on accelerating zero-emission transport for similar countries in Asia.

In Hanoi on the 31st of March 2023, Viet Nam’s efforts to accelerate “net-zero emission” were boosted today with a kick-off workshop on “National electric vehicle roadmap development” with officials from the Ministry of Transport, relevant units/agencies as well as leading experts from WRI, ICCT, and GIZ in attendance.
